Endocrine Report

IMG_9545We had an endocrine appointment today.  It was another good news bad news kind of an appointment.  The good first.  Rachel gained weight (about 3 lbs since her November appointment 58lbs to 62.2).  While that is good, her issues with weight and colds/coughs make a huge difference on her weight.  When she is sick, the coughing  burns an amazing amount of calories.  Add to that, the fact that Rachel has yet to be able to get over a cold with out some help  from antibiotics which annihilates her appetite.   So, while that is encouraging news to have gained weight (Christmas 2013 she was at 67 lbs), it is still a work in progress.  The really good news is that

Rachel grew almost an inch in the last four months!!

IMG_9544This is more than she has grown in almost two years!!!  Praise the Lord for the growth!  The doctor said that because of this growth, it shows evidence that she does not need growth hormones which is a blessing.  While they are good for growth, they do have some side effects that are more difficult to handle in light of cf.  So a praise all around there.

Of course, the appointment did have some “cautionary” issues that were somewhat concerning.  Rachel is almost ten.  If she can grow well till she hits puberty, that will be the best scenario!  Once the estrogen hormone becomes a major player in the game…growth virtually slows to a stop.  So while Rachel’s bone age is somewhere around 7 1/2 years old (which is good for her bones and overall size, showing evidence that there are more years for her bones to grow) her actual age could play into this pretty significantly.  She is at a slight disadvantage because maturity is likely to follow maternal patterns.  I hit puberty somewhere very close to ten.  So…the crux of it is that we will pray that she delays puberty for as long as possible and DOES NOT follow mom’s pattern.  And…that she continues to grow at this current rate for a good long time!

The more we go to doctors, and we go to A LOT OF THEM!!  =)  The more I see reasons that it is called a “practice”.  There are just too many variables for a doctor to be able to accurately or possibly be able to determin such things .  But, for now, I continue to remind Rachel that she will be as tall as God desires her to be.  She gets a bit upset at times knowing that there are many “vertically challenged” people with cf, and things like the fact her little sister is nearly as tall as she is.  Again…God is in control of all things~ EVEN how tall a person grows to be!  She will be perfect, just as He designed her to be.

Thankful for His mercy and the good news from today!
