Looking Behind, Hope Ahead

Well, Kim is home!!  Praise the Lord.  She came home on Friday after nearly two weeks in the hospital.   The last few days at the hospital Kim was full of energy and spirit.  The doctor said that that was likely to change after she was off of the chemo for a few days.  And, that is exactly what we have noticed.  Her energy dropped pretty quick.  From our understanding, she was given a steroid while doing the chemo to help her system manage the effects.  Less than 10 hours off of the chemo she was struggling a bit with nausea, weakness, and extreme fatigue.    IMG_2408

She is now almost 48 hours off chemo and while very weak, she is so glad to struggle with this at home!  I spent the first day/night with her in a “sister sleep over”.  She did great, and actually in typical Kim fashion, she was a bit annoyed that I was choosing to stay with her.  She was sure she did not need me, but I wouldn’t take no for an answer, so…she unhappily relented.  Kim did just fine and really didn’t need me, although I felt better being there and observing her.  She does have a weird little cough that chokes her a bit sometimes.  (Not sure why, but I assume from our experience with Rachel’s steroid use that Kim coming off the steroid has something to do with this cough).  Thankfully, Jacob stayed last night and will again tonight. After two solid weeks, it is a blessing to be at home with my hubby and kids.  Not to mention we are a bit snowed in. =) God’s timing is perfect with the snow and Jacob being able to be there for his mama.

Upon leaving the hospital the doctor said that her white blood count was very low.  It is currently at .4!!  The number we are hoping to get her blood to is 4.  While that is still quite a bit lower than the normal 8-12 for a healthy individual, it would provide some immunity to be around groups of people.  Kim goes in this week to check her blood count, platelets and hemoglobin levels.  Praying that all of the hairy cells were wiped out and that her body is beginning to produce healthy blood on its own!  We continue to watch for fevers, checking her temperature every 4 hours, at minimum.  More than 1out of Blood cancer causes a critical time limit with the fevers as explained by the doctor.  He basically said that with a fever, she could be unresponsive or dead in less than 24 hours.  Kinda scary!!  Dr. added some humor in that he said, if she came in unresponsive, he would revive her, but THEN he would kill her for not calling or coming in at the first sign of a fever.  While he was lighthearted in his humor, the seriousness of the fevers were clearly, and solemnly understood.

Kim is definitely used to being on the go ALL THE TIME, so the great lack of energy, and weakness is bothersome to her.  However, overall she has done amazing!!  Praising the Lord for this first leg of the journey.  We really don’t know what comes next.  It all depends on how her body responds as to what direction the protocol will be!

-God’s clear direction.
-Energy to return to Kim.
-Good nutrition and no nausea
-No fevers
-Joy in the midst of the struggle
-For Kim & Jacob to clearly see Jesus daily

Thank you for all of the prayers and love for our family over last few weeks as we have certainly felt them.  Due to the heavy snow this morning we enjoyed church at home.  During praise time, we sang the song, Great is Thy Faithfulness.  What a beautiful reminder ~For we KNOW by looking at the faithfulness of the Lord in the past, that He is trustworthy and Oh, so good to handle our future.  Today, that brings great HOPE~

I leave you with the words of this inspiring, age old song of His faithfulness and provisions.

Great is thy faithfulness, O God my father
There is no shadow of turning with Thee
Thou changest not, Thy compassions, they fail not
As Thou hast been, Thou for ever will be
Great is thy faithfulness
Great is thy faithfulness
Morning by morning new mercies I see
All I have needed thy hand hath provided
Great is thy faithfulness, Lord unto me

Summer and winter, and springtime and harvest
Sun, moon and stars in their courses above
Join with all nature in manifold witness
To thy great faithfulness, mercy and love

Great is thy faithfulness
Great is thy faithfulness
Morning by morning new mercies I see
All I have needed thy hand hath provided
Great is thy faithfulness, Lord unto me
Great is thy faithfulness

Pardon for sin and a peace that endureth
Thine own dear presence to cheer and to guide
Strength for today and bright hope for tomorrow
Blessings all mine, with ten thousand beside

Great is thy faithfulness
Great is thy faithfulness
All I have needed thy hand hath provided
Great is thy faithfulness, Lord unto me,
