Praise and Further Prayer

Well, I received the call from the doctor today.  He told me that Rachel’s nut allergies and peanut allergies confirmed the skin tests and that she appears to no longer react to these foods.  (However, since she has never actually had any nuts or a peanut, he would still like her to first try them in the office under his observations.  Which, given our experience with scary allergies, seems prudent.)

Then the big news…her egg allergic numbers went from 15 last year (30 the prior time) to just 4!!!!!!

The first time AND last time Rachel had an egg on purpose. August 25th, 2007.  She had just turned two.   I took this picture after spending several hours at the hospital. Her face is still puffy and color still look odd hours later. It was a very scary day, and one that changed our lives drastically. Lord, willing, our lives will again be changed drastically, in a positive way soon!

So while this number is still high as anything over 1 is considered allergic, the fact that it has dropped considerably is significant!  Also, her overall IgE levels were relatively low too.  The final key that the doctor and I discussed is the fact that the egg protein is somewhat unique in how it responds to heat.  The instability with heat, helps her chances to be able to eat heat treated foods (i.e. baked goods).

So here is a brief synopsis of the line of thinking that the doctor and I discussed.  **The types of modification that the food proteins may undergo during processing include protein unfolding and aggregation, in addition to chemical modifications. Both of these have the potential to affect stability to digestion, and hence the form in which allergens are presented to the immune system with regards both sensitisation and elicitation. The extent to which proteins are affected by processing conditions is process dependent, since protein denaturation requires the presence of water, proteins becoming more thermostable in low-water systems (Gekko and Timasheff 1981). Combinations to time and temperature, the presence of other ingredients, such as fats and sugars also affect the patterns and kinetics of food proteins denaturation and aggregation.

SOOOOO…the hope and prayer is that we would be able to try some of the egg containing products that have been exposed to heat.  So, we are going to start easy, and try the egg battered chicken nuggets that she first ate by mistake again this Thursday at 1 pm. (this was the first appointment that they had available…was really hoping for tomorrow morning first thing, but hey we have waited almost 9 years, so what’s three more days?).   The fact that Rachel has asked for those specific nuggets several times will make this hopefully a rewarding first food challenge.  Next we will try a baked good, maybe a cookie or a piece of chocolate cake.  Might be the most interesting doctors visit ever!

While we are really excited to hear that her numbers dropped, there is still a bit of fear and trepidation present.  When you see your child nearly die because of a food…it takes some serious, prayerful faith to move forward.  But, we ARE trusting God!   It’s amazing how you can pray for something for years and years and yet when the times comes to see it tested, the enemy uses the human nature of fear =( , BUT HE IS BIGGER!!  We are claiming victory in Jesus and His word!

2 Timothy 1:7 For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind.

So, if you think about it, please pray for Rachel’s safety first!  There is still a risk that she could react.  The test will consist of eating a small amount of the food and then waiting 15 minutes or so and then repeating it with gradual higher doses.   Please pray for peace during the test for both her an myself (and that she would be hungry enough to eat).  AND…for a non-reactive test!  This process will take some time.  I am not sure how fast we will move throughout the testing process, but slow and steady seems to be the plan at this point.  After we try this first item containing eggs we may move onto others (as we are really, REALLy trying to increase her caloric intake) or we may potentially try the peanuts the next time?  Not sure yet.  Rachel was pretty excited about the peanuts.  BUT…you will maybe giggle like I did when she said, “Oh, I can’t wait to try peanut butter on CELERY!!!!”  Really, celery?  I was thinking more like CHOCOLATE mixed with PEANUT BUTTER!!!  But hey, we will take what we can get. =)

Well for now, we are pretty thankful for the good news of having low numbers and at least trying to challenge these allergic foods.  A huge answer to prayer!!  Please continue praying for God’s will and protection for our girl.  I am sure my anxiety will be sky high throughout this process.  But, I will choose to remember that He loves her more than I ever possibly could (and I love her bunches =) ).  Also, I know that He has her life in His hands.

Jeremiah 29:11b For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future. I am thankful for His ever faithful care, wisdom and direction.
